Research and Relaxation

Here’s another article showing that massage combined with heat relaxes the autonomic nervous system.

Research Shows Massage Therapy Relaxes the Autonomic Nervous System

I have a love-hate relationship with articles like this. On the one hand, I love them because there is science that explains WHY massage is good for this or that, for the science-based people who need to have a reason and an explanation for every little thing.

On the other hand, I read it and think, “Well, DUH! Every massage therapist who did their homework in school knows this stuff!” It’s nice to be validated, though.

Regarding this research, I find it interesting that they combined heat with massage, but didn’t say what kind of heat. Hot Stone, perhaps? And the test subjects were “required” to receive a 40-minute massage every day for two weeks. Wow, wouldn’t you love to be a part of that study group?! I’d be as relaxed as a wet noodle by the end of the study.

Humor aside, I’m sure that the reason for the unusual frequency of the massages in this study was to be able to produce measurable results in a short period of time, but this does not invalidate the effectiveness of receiving regular massages on a less-frequent basis. My observation is that clients who come in at least once a month seem to experience the greatest ongoing benefit. Clients who come in less frequently seem to experience temporary, short-term benefits.

Now that you know that there are scientifically-proven benefits of massage, you should pick up the phone and make an appointment right now, while you’re thinking about it!
